ROUNDUP: Perez’s double play allows Sierra Vista to walk off with win
Julian Cutolo’s two-out single in the sixth inning drove in the go-ahead run, and Armando Perez started a game-ending double play Saturday to preserve host Sierra Vista’s 4-3 win over Palo Verde’s baseball team.
Cutolo’s single plated Jake Hager with the go-ahead run after Hager, who hit 2-for-3, reached on a wind-blown double.
The Panthers had the potential tying run at second base with one out in the seventh when Perez made a nice catch on a fly ball in right field and doubled off the runner at second to end the game.
Matt Hutchings went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles for Palo Verde.
Rancho 20, Las Vegas 9 — At St. George, Utah, Kevin Kline hit two of the Rams’ five home runs as Rancho beat the Northeast League-rival Wildcats in the championship game of the Little Caesar’s Invitational.
Kline finished 2-for-3, including a fourth-inning grand slam, and had six RBIs.
Eric Holdren went 3-for-5 with a grand slam in Rancho’s nine-run second inning, a double and five RBIs, and teammates Scott Koenen and Gabe Chavira each batted 2-for-3 and hit back-to-back homers in the sixth inning.
Brandon Pletsch notched three singles for the Rams, Josh Gomez added a double and a single, and Eddie Brandstadter tallied a triple and a single.
Tanner Chauncer had two doubles for Las Vegas, and teammate Quinnton Mack homered.
Rancho 8, Snow Canyon (Utah) 2 — At St. George, Utah, Holdren went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and struck out 10 batters in six innings of work on the mound to advance Rancho to the title game of the Little Caesar’s Invitational.
Kline was 2-for-3 with a triple for the Rams. Gomez finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, and Pletsch was 2-for-4 with a double for Rancho.
Silverado 11, Desert Oasis 0 — At Silverado, Bobby Johnson tossed a three-hitter, hit a game-ending grand slam in the fifth inning, and went 2-for-4 with five RBIs as the Skyhawks routed Desert Oasis.
Johnson struck out five and didn’t allow a walk.
Mike Meyers and Wyatt Reid each hit a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI for Silverado, and teammate Morgan Stotts added two doubles.
Highland (Calif.) 3, Silverado 2 — At Silverado, the Skyhawks scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but came up short against Highland.
Jeremy Morski went 2-for-4 and scored a run for Silverado.
