Clark waits for right shot in 2OT

Clark’s boys basketball team had turned the ball over 22 times heading into the second overtime Tuesday. So Chargers coach Chad Beeten decided the best strategy might be to do nothing at all.

Clark held the ball for about two minutes against Mojave’s 1-3-1 zone to start the second overtime before Keyshaun Webb hit a 3-pointer from the right corner with 1:21 left to break a tie, and the Chargers held on for a 52-47 home victory.

“We finally made a big shot,” Beeten said. “We finally executed something.”

Clark (7-5, 3-0 Sunset League) kept the ball in the hands of senior guards Colby Jackson and Carter Olsen as the clock wound down. Jackson then made a quick drive and kick to Webb in the corner for the shot that put the Chargers up 47-44.

“We had 22 turnovers or something of that sort,” Beeten said. “Basically that’s a third of the possessions of the game. And if you’re going to give up a third of the possessions of the game, we just figured if they’re in that 1-3-1, let’s let the clock run and break it down to one or two possessions and hopefully we’ll make more plays than they do.”

Making plays, especially on offense, had been a struggle for both teams. Clark was 14-for-45 (31.1 percent) from the field. Mojave (6-6, 2-1) was 21-for-57 (36.8 percent).

“I was pretty confident in our defense as long as we could finally get a score,” Beeten said. “And we finally got a score.”

Clark had struggled from the free-throw line all night, but made 5 of 8 in the second overtime to seal the win. The Chargers were 20-for-37 for the game. Mojave didn’t shoot a free throw.

“We missed the front end of five one-and-ones, and that’s just not going to cut it,” Beeten said. “We did make them down the stretch, fortunately, but we could have made our lives a lot easier had we made free throws during the course of the game.”

Both teams were coming off a long layoff, and the rust showed. Clark, which finished with 24 turnovers, hadn’t played since Dec. 20. Mojave, which had 22 turnovers, hadn’t played since Dec. 15.

“Ugly. It was like we were back in middle school again,” Beeten said. “They had a long break, we had a long break, and I think that’s probably some of it, just not being game ready.”

Carter Olsen scored 16 points, and Webb had 11 points, nine rebounds and four steals for the Chargers.

Ty’Rek Wells, who played little during the first three quarters because of foul trouble, finished with nine points and nine rebounds for Clark.

“I’m a straight shooter with these kids, and I told him, ‘You absolutely stunk tonight, but you figured out a way to come up with some tough plays,’ ” Beeten said. “And that’s what tough kids do and tough teams do.”

Jordan Glenn led Mojave with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Chrishawn Thomas had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Rattlers.
