Lake Mead guards share top Class 1A Southern League boys basketball honor

Opponents had a tough time defending the Lake Mead boys basketball team’s trio of perimeter scorers this season.

Coaches also had a tough time choosing between the three for postseason honors in the Class 1A Southern League.

Lake Mead senior guard Jeffrey Newton and junior guard De’Quan Thompson were voted by coaches as league Co-Most Valuable Player. Junior guard Landon Littlefield was voted onto the first team.

“It was nice,” Lake Mead coach Jeff Newton said of his son and Thompson sharing MVP. “I wanted it to be three people, to be honest with you.”

Coaches are prohibited from voting for their own players for all-league honors, Coach Newton said.

Lake Mead (25-8) won its second straight 1A state title with a 59-49 win over Pahranagat Valley at the Orleans Arena on Saturday.

“I truly believe if you take one of those (three) kids off the team, we don’t win the state championship,” Coach Newton said.

Coach of the Year went to Beatty’s Brian Hayes, who guided the Hornets to a 7-3 league record and the semifinals of the league tournament.

The first team is comprised of Littlefield, Trinity’s Budweiser Hawkins, Henderson International’s Clay Tormey and Danny Moerman, Pahranagat Valley’s Cody Hoiser and Brady Whipple, Spring Mountain’s Davonte Sandifer and Beatty’s Joe Serrano.

Second-team honors went to Indian Springs’ Junior Baker, Brady Hughes and Patrick McClain, Round Mountain’s Will Sweeney and Clint Wilson, Spring Mountain’s Terence Green, Beatty’s Jacob Sumpter and Anthony Regalado, Pahranagat Valley’s Taylor Poulsen and Lake Mead’s Cameron Cornish.
