Logan leads Bengals to OT win at Eldorado

Bonanza's boys basketball lost an overtime thriller at home to Eldorado when the teams met last season.

The Bengals returned the favor Wednesday.

Jamal Logan had 17 of his 31 points in the second half and overtime, and visiting Bonanza outlasted the Sundevils 76-71.

"It's kind of funny it went this way," Bonanza coach Eric Markuson said. "We knew it would be an up-and-down battle with them. We just had to hold on and withstand it."

Davian Jordan finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for the Bengals (4-1), and John Holden provided a lift with 12 points and nine rebounds while helping to contain Eldorado center Dyllan Kounovsky after halftime.

Holden grabbed an offensive rebound and converted a three-point play to tie the game at 65 with 1:15 remaining in regulation. The Sundevils (3-2) held for the final shot, but Jordan deflected Kounovsky's pass at the high post with three seconds left and Bonanza came up with the loose ball to help send the game into overtime.

"He's been battling some back issues the last three weeks, and that's why he didn't start," Markuson said of Holden. "We didn't know if he'd play, or how much he'd play. We needed some size, and he came in and did a good job."

Bonanza opened the overtime on a 9-2 run as Logan, who also had eight rebounds and seven steals, found Holden for an easy basket and then finished off a fast break to give the Bengals a 74-67 lead.

Carl Crayon made a 3-pointer with 36 seconds left to cut Bonanza's lead to 74-70, but that was as close as the Sundevils got.

"We played really hard," Markuson said. "We adjusted, we adapted, and that's kind of the name of the game. Some things weren't working for us, so we changed them up a little bit and found something that worked and we stuck with it."

Carmonte Jones led Eldorado with 21 points, and Crayon scored 10 of his 17 points after halftime.

Kounovsky finished with 14 points and 17 rebounds and capped an 11-0 run that gave the Sundevils a 65-62 lead with 2:14 left in the fourth quarter.

Eldorado led for much of the second quarter before the Bengals closed the half on an 11-0 run. The Sundevils committed three turnovers in the final 55 seconds that Bonanza converted into six points and a 33-27 halftime lead.

Logan's step-back 3-pointer midway through the third quarter gave Bonanza a 40-32 lead, and his steal and layup put the Bengals up 53-45 early in the fourth before Eldorado rallied.

"He's money in the clutch," Markuson said. "He's not afraid to take over when he needs to take over. All of them together, they just do a great job."
