RECRUITING: Roquemore ends waiting period, picks Santa Clara

Evan Roquemore had waited patiently for a scholarship offer he felt would be a perfect fit.

On Monday, the former Foothill point guard decided he didn’t want to wait any longer.

Roquemore, a recent Foothill graduate, gave an oral commitment to Santa Clara on Monday. He expects to sign his letter of intent with the Broncos no later than Tuesday — when he plans to arrive in the Bay Area.

“It’s definitely exciting,” Roquemore said. “All the hard work paid off.”

The 6-foot-2-inch Roquemore said he previously had offers from Air Force, Ball State, Eastern Washington and Southern Methodist.

He was considering enrolling at a prep school in the fall to increase his exposure, but reconsidered after Santa Clara extended a scholarship offer earlier this month.

“I didn’t really want to go to a prep school, but if I had to, it was an option,” Roquemore said.

Roquemore earned first-team all-state honors and was named Southeast League Most Valuable Player as a senior. He averaged 23.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.2 assists in leading the Falcons to the Sunrise Region final.

In recent weeks, he has played on the summer circuit with Dream Vision 17s (Calif.), which also showcases Bishop Gorman junior guard Shabazz Muhammad and Findlay Prep junior swingman Winston Shepard.

Roquemore hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer Sunday to give Dream Vision a 65-62 overtime win over 43 Hoops (Minn.) and carry the team into the round of eight of the adidas Super 64 at Rancho.

“It was fun getting to play against the best players and in front of all the coaches,” Roquemore said. “I kind of just wanted to play in Vegas one more time.”
