ROUNDUP: Canyon Springs edges Rancho in boys basketball, runs table in league play

Even though Canyon Springs’ boys basketball team had the Northeast League title in hand, the Pioneers wanted to run the table in league play.

All that stood in the way was Rancho on Friday night, and the Rams needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.

However, the wheels came off the Rams’ wagon in overtime, and Canyon Springs escaped with a 67-60 home victory.

The Rams (16-11, 7-7) led for the final time at 58-57 after a 3-pointer from Amir Royal. But Rancho turned the ball over on its next four possessions, and the Pioneers (22-3, 14-0) took control.

“I told the players the first two minutes of overtime was going to dictate who wanted the game,” Canyon Springs coach Daryl Branham said. “We got plays from everyone, including a big 3-pointer from (Jared) Brandon.

“People think because we went undefeated, our league is a bit mediocre, but it’s far from that.”

The Pioneers played the extra period without starter Jeremy Alexander, who left the game with cramps at the end of regulation. Branham said Alexander should be ready to go for the playoffs next week.

Following Brandon’s 3-pointer, the Pioneers outscored the Rams 7-2 to remain undefeated against Nevada teams this season.

“It was a fight,” Branham said. “We needed to execute, rebound and make stops in the extra period, and we did all of those. It’s good to see everyone step things up once Jeremy went down.”

Rancho trailed by five points heading into the fourth quarter but rallied behind Fabian Dominguez’s six points and two baskets from

Royal. Both teams had a chance to win in regulation, but Alexander fell on Canyon Springs’ final chance, and Royal missed an open 3-pointer at the buzzer.
