ROUNDUP: Mountain View boys ride fast break to lopsided win

In the words of junior guard Justyn Anderson, Mountain View’s boys basketball team began Monday’s game against Calvary Chapel “at a little lull.”

But the Saints turned up their fast break, erasing an eight-point deficit entering the second quarter, to run by the Lions for a 75-48 home win in the Class 2A Southern League.

Mountain View (7-7, 3-0) scored 18 points in transition during the middle quarters, when it outscored Calvary Chapel 40-18 to take control.

“The faster we get the ball up, the faster we score points,” Anderson said. “That’s a big thing for our team; we’ve got to get quick buckets.”

Anderson scored 27 of his game-high 30 points after the first quarter and keyed Mountain View’s transition game with six steals.

“Justyn’s just a great leader,” Saints coach Ray LeBoeuf said. “He understands the game very well. He’ll wait to see what opponents are trying to do.”

Trevor Van Kempen scored 20 points and Karl Benjamin grabbed 15 rebounds for Mountain View.

Tyler Moore led Calvary Chapel (6-5, 0-3) with 19 points and nine rebounds. Joey Peterson added 16 points and Kapono Tanaka-Sanders 10 for the Lions, who couldn’t hold onto a 16-8 lead after the first quarter.

Mountain View began the second quarter on a 17-2 run and closed the third on an 11-2 spurt.

“The guys just took initiative and we played harder,” Anderson said of the final three periods. “As the game progressed, we kept building on the lead and came out with the victory.”

The Saints know the toughest opponents on their league schedule — Needles, Agassi Prep and Lincoln County — lie ahead. But they’ll take a 3-0 start.

“These three teams at home really were must-haves at the beginning of the year,” said LeBoeuf, whose team also beat league foes White Pine and West Wendover. “Everybody did what they needed to do to pull that out, so it’s a sigh of relief we’ve done what we needed to do to hold serve.”

GIRLS

Mountain View 61, Calvary Chapel 31 — At Mountain View, Briana Marruffo scored 15 points to lead the Saints to a rout of the Lions.

Zari Riley added 11 points for Mountain View, which outscored Calvary Chapel 21-5 in the second quarter. A’Riane Holliday had nine points and five steals for the Saints, and Patrice Marshall contributed six points and eight rebounds.

Samantha Mann led Calvary Chapel with 11 points.
