SIERRA VISTA TOURNEY: Undersized center leads Coronado’s boys to win

At 6-feet-5-inches tall, Brandon Glanz isn’t your typical center.

 

He has, though, become Coronado’s boys’ center of attention. And for good reason.

 

The 235-pound senior poured in 27 points Saturday morning, helping the Cougars to an 82-66 win over Southeast League-rival Del Sol in the Sierra Vista Invitational.

 

“He’s big and strong, and he wants to be on the floor 24 hours a day,” Coronado coach Paul Berg said.

 

Glanz, who averaged eight points per game as a junior, has scored at least 22 points in all but one of Coronado’s first seven games and is averaging 24.4 ppg.

 

Glanz, who also leads Coronado in rebounding, is difficult to defend because he can handle the ball well and has a good outside shot.

 

“He’s been working on his shot,” Berg said. “He can step out and hit the three. He works hard at both ends of the floor.”
He’s gotten plenty of help, too.

 

Junior point guard Austin Nelson, who averages more than 16 ppg, added 24 points Saturday.

 

“They both complement each other,” Berg said. “That’s what really makes teams. You need a good point guard and a good big man.

 

“Teams that have tried to double and triple-team Brandon, Austin has found other guys with 14 or 15 assists in a game. It’s hard to guard inside-out.”

 

That duo has the Cougars off to a 6-2 start and looking like a team that will compete for the Southeast crown.

 

Adam Schmitt added 14 points and R.J. Newton had 10 for Coronado.

 

Jeff Coon led Del Sol with 32 points. James Johnson added 12 for the Dragons.

 

Coronado 106, Clark 99 — Glanz scored 13 of his 34 points after regulation time as Coronado outlasted the Chargers.

 

Schmitt added 30, Nelson had 17 and Gaven Holcomb netted 16 for Coronado.

 

Clark made a 3-pointer in the final five seconds of both regulation and the first overtime period to tie the game.

 

Steven Dancy paced Clark with 36 points. Mike Allen added 17, Alejandro Rangel had 16 and Wayne Pittman contributed 12 for the Chargers.

 

Sierra Vista 67, Arbor View 59 — Viko Noma’aea poured in 41 points — including a 3-pointer that beat the third-quarter buzzer — to send the Mountain Lions past Arbor View.

 

Gary Jacobs and Justice Odabi each added 10 points for Sierra Vista.

 

Darington Banks scored 29 points and Maiscei Grier had 14 for the Aggies.

 

Sierra Vista 71, Gleneagle (Canada) 44 — Noma’aea scored 25 points, and the Mountain Lions bounced back from a quick 9-2 deficit to rout Gleneagle.

 

Odabi added 13 points for Sierra Vista.

Cimarron-Memorial 71, Clark 56 — Kevin Olekaibe poured in 37 points, and the Spartans broke open a close game late to down Clark.

 

Dancy had 22 points for Clark, which trailed only 33-30 at the half.

 

Cimarron-Memorial 81, Del Sol  56 — Brandon Washington scored 16 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter to help the Spartans run away from Del Sol.

 

Olekaibe had 20 first-half points and finished with 26 for the Spartans.

 

Coon led the Dragons with 22 points. Johnson scored 13, and David Day had 10 for Del Sol.

 

Gleneagle (Canada) 51, Tech 50 — Gleneagle made 9-of-12 free throws in the fourth quarter to nip the Roadrunners.

 

Ben Seibert led Tech with 28 points, and Michael Johnson added 15.

 

Arbor View 77, Tech 65 — Anthony Trepagnier had 23 points, and Arbor View outscored the Roadrunners 28-19 in the fourth quarter to put away the win.

 

Banks had 18 points and Brian Vignaud added 12 for the Aggies.

 

Johnson paced Tech with 27. Mike Maglich added 14 points and Seibert had 13 for the Roadrunners.

GIRLS

Jeanette Jackson saw only about six minutes of playing time in Sierra Vista’s first game Saturday.

 

So just in case the second game was going to be the same, Jackson made sure to score early.

 

Jackson drained four 3-pointers in the first five minutes against Del Sol and finished with 24 points as the Mountain Lions beat the Dragons, 61-41.

 

Jackson scored just two points in Sierra Vista’s 53-16 romp over Gleneagle (Canada) in the opening game of the tournament, and watched most of the game from the bench as her less-seasoned teammates got more court time.

 

The rest must have done her some good.

 

Jackson hit three-straight treys as Sierra Vista bolted to a 20-3 lead and cruised to the win.

 

Nicolette Grigsby added 17 points for Sierra Vista.

 

Amy Austin led Del Sol with 19 points.

 

Sierra Vista 53, Gleneagle (Canada) 16 — The host Mountain Lions pitched a first-quarter shutout, taking a 19-0 lead and cruising past Gleneagle.

 

Kalyn Reed led the Mountain Lions with 12 points.

Canyon Springs 41, Del Sol 14 — Canyon Springs scored the final 19 points of the game to pull away from the Dragons.

 

Kenosha Wright had 16 points to lead the Pioneers.

 

Canyon Springs 51, Gleneagle (Canada) 14 — Canyon Springs used a 16-1 first-quarter run and a 16-0 third-quarter burst to bury the Talons.

 

Wright scored 12 points for the Pioneers.

 

Sylmar (Calif.) 38, Durango 28 — Sylmar outscored the Trailblazers 14-3 in the final quarter to pull out the win.

 

Cherelle Hicks and Jasmine Thomas each scored 10 points for Durango.

 

Durango 37, Arbor View 36 — Megan Tullis made 1-of-2 free throws with 48.2 seconds left in overtime as the Trailblazers edged the Aggies.

 

Durango missed a shot to win the game at the end of regulation and didn’t allow the Aggies a good look to win it in overtime.

 

Tullis scored only five points, but had all three of Durango’s points in the extra period.

 

Marley Sandoval led Durango with 11 points. Hicks and Thomas each scored 10.

 

Jenna Valenzuela had 17 points for the Aggies.

Arbor View 51, Chaparral 37 — Ashley Yancey led a balanced attack with 14 points as the Aggies downed the Cowboys.

 

Valenzuela added 13 points and Erika Lang had 12 for Arbor View.

 

Janae Neuville led Chaparral with 11 points.

Sylmar (Calif.) 63, Chaparral 29 — Sylmar sprinted to a 23-7 first-quarter lead and never looked back.

 

Neuville led the Cowboys with 10 points.
