Superintendents approve some realignment

Nevada's superintendents have given the green light to realigning Classes 3A and 4A.

Class 1A and 2A, though, still need some work.

The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association announced Friday that superintendents approved the proposed emergency realignment for all of Class 3A and Class 4A and for Northern Nevada's Class 2A schools.

The superintendents, who oversee the NIAA, made some yet unannounced requests to revise the plan to realign Class 1A and Southern Nevada's Class 2A.

The realignment proposal is expected to be voted on at the NIAA's board of control meeting on March 10 in Reno.

The Class 3A and 4A realignment basically boiled down to incorporating the three Southern Nevada Class 3A schools — Boulder City, Moapa Valley and Virgin Valley — into the Class 4A Northeast League for scheduling purposes and then breaking them back out for postseason play. How teams would be seeded in postseason hasn't been determined.

The Class 1A and 2A realignment is far more complex and involves mixing teams from those classes in different leagues to help cut down on the amount of travel. Currently, Needles and West Wendover — separated by more than 500 miles — are both in the Class 2A Southern League.

NIAA executive director Eddie Bonine was not available for comment Friday, but is expected to communicate with the superintendents early next week to determine what revisions need to be made for the lower classes.
