Third-quarter run pushes Bishop O’Dowd past Gorman boys

Bishop O’Dowd (Calif.) scored the first 14 points of the second half on Saturday en route to a 63-55 win over Bishop Gorman in Newark, Calif.

The Dragons, ranked No. 16 in the nation by USA Today, held Gorman scoreless in the third quarter until Ugo Amadi hit a 3-pointer with about 2:30 to go in the period to cut the lead to 44-33.

Gorman missed its first nine shots of the second half and turned the ball over four times before finally scoring.

Ivan Rabb had 28 points and 16 rebounds to lead O’Dowd, which beat Gorman for the second consecutive season. The Gaels entered the season ranked No. 4 in the nation.

Paris Austin added 15 points and five assists for the Dragons. Austin scored 11 points in the second half, including seven to lead the third-quarter run.

Gorman’s Deon Whiteside hit an 18-foot jumper to start the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 49-40, but Rabb followed with a pair of stick-backs to push the lead back to double digits. Gorman couldn’t cut the lead to less than 10 again until the final minute on a bucket by Charles O’Bannon with about 10 seconds to play.

Stephen Zimmerman led the Gaels with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Chase Jeter added 10 points and five rebounds for Gorman, but didn’t score in the second half.

The Gaels finished with 22 turnovers and made just 7 of 15 free throws.
