VEGAS INVITE: Freshman Floyd quarterbacks Clark girls to win

If Clark’s girls basketball team played football, freshman wing Bobbi Floyd would be the quarterback.

And coach Michael Moulchin would see nothing wrong with starting the young signal caller.

Floyd had 17 points, seven rebounds and five steals Tuesday to help the Chargers cruise past Calvary Chapel, 53-38 in the Vegas Invitational at Mountain View.

“It says a lot about (Floyd) because she’s a freshman. She’s stepped up a lot to handling responsibility,” Molchin said. “She’s a very good student, and she has very good fundamentals. But she always steps up under pressure, which is enormous for us. And she’s really easy to coach.

“We’re really putting a lot on her, and she’s really developed. I’m really proud of her.”

The freshman’s first points came midway through the first quarter with a 3-pointer that gave the Chargers a 7-5 lead, and Clark never looked back.

“We came off the zone, and started to press a bit more. I said, 'Let’s just run,’” Molchin said. “So we went to the ball, and I told Bobbi she was going to have to quarterback for us ... And that’s how she played.”

Floyd notched 10 points in the second half as Clark (2-3) extended a 33-24 halftime advantage by locking down the Lions.

Shyanne Carter-Wade added 14 points for the Chargers, and Johnice Bland chipped in 10 — all in the first half.

“Johnice is a sophomore, and we start three freshmen and a sophomore,” Molchin said. “We’re a young team. We’re going to take our lumps, but it will make us better.”

Ashley Robinson had five rebounds for Clark, and teammate Lisa Ko supplied nine points and two assists.

Phallen Nelson led Calvary Chapel (3-5) with 12 points, two assists and two steals.

Lake Mead 55, Rock Academy (Calif.) 46 — Taylor Vetter had 15 points to lead the Eagles (3-7) past the Warriors in the consolation bracket.

Shannon Regan added 12 points, and Colleen Zumaran supplied 11 points for Lake Mead.

Michaela Mueller led Rock Academy with 18 points.

Moapa Valley 55, Fairmont Prep (Calif.) 46 — Chanel LaCroix poured in 17 points to help the Pirates (3-5) dispatch the Huskies.

Makendie Frei supplied 11 points for Moapa Valley, which outscored Fairmont Prep 21-8 in the second quarter.

Blayson Varnadoe tallied 32 points for the Huskies.

Fairmont Prep 58, Agassi Prep 28 — Varnadoe scored 20 points as the Huskies routed the Stars (0-4).

Jada Smith scored 11 points to lead Agassi Prep.

Chadwick (Calif.) 41, Moapa Valley 16 — Laura McLaughlin racked up 18 points and four rebounds as the Dolphins cruised past the Pirates to advance to the tournament semifinals.
