DURANGO
Head coach: Matt Gerber, third season (5-14)
2013 record: 0-9 (0-5 Northwest League, sixth)
Returning lettermen (starters): 11 (four offense, four defense)
Base offensive set: Spread
Base defensive set: 3-5
Top offensive players: RB Leontre Austin (Jr.); WR Kavon Asgari (Sr.); OL Elijah Colbert (Sr.)
Top defensive players: LB Artie Gallegos (Sr.): LB Kavon Asgari (Sr.)
Outlook: The Durango offense was dismal last season, as the Trailblazers were shut out three times and never scored more than 20 points in a game.
But Gerber is confident the team can be stronger offensively thanks to a group of young quarterbacks and receivers.
Austin was the team’s top rusher with 197 yards and two TDs last season.
The 275-pound Colbert will anchor the line, and the Durango roster does include some good size.
Gerber said the defensive backs will lead an aggressive defense.
“The team will be young with eight sophomores up on the varsity looking to compete for quality minutes and many other new players on the team this season,” Gerber said. “Game-to-game improvement is the main focus of the team this season.”
