CLASS 2A ALL-STATE: Stars’ Porter earns offensive player of year

Agassi Prep running back DeVonn Porter was the lone Southern Nevada player to receive a major award on the Class 2A all-state football team announced Tuesday.
Porter, a senior, was named 2A State Offensive Player of the Year by the state’s coaches following a season in which he rushed for 1,125 yards and 18 touchdowns to lead the Stars (7-3) to the state semifinals and their first winning season at the 11-man level.
Northern Nevada teams dominated the top awards.
Rite of Passage running back and defensive back Devontay Williams was named Player of the Year, and teammate Michael Sylvester took Lineman of the Year.
Yerington linebacker Miguel Rodregues was voted Defensive Player of the Year. Pershing County’s Dave McLean was named Coach of the Year.
Several players from Southern Nevada received first-team all-state honors.
First-team offensive recognition went to: The Meadows quarterback Garrett Gosse and receiver Austin Brown; Needles running back Daric Courtwright; Mountain View return specialist Justyn Anderson and offensive lineman Taylor Williams; White Pine tight end Jake Johnson; and Agassi Prep offensive lineman Adrian Huling.
First-team defensive honorees included: Mountain View defensive lineman Henry Santos; Needles defensive lineman Brad Lewis; White Pine linebacker Clay Mauro; Needles linebacker Courtwright; The Meadows defensive back Brown; Mountain View defensive back Anderson; and Calvary Chapel punter Cody Taylor.
