Fisher’s late field goal lifts Foothill to victory over Basic

Cory Fisher made a 32-yard field goal with 57 seconds remaining in regulation, and Foothill held on for a 30-27 victory over host Basic on Thursday.

Fisher, who missed from 41 and 36 yards in the first half, capped a 12-play, 65-yard drive as the Falcons (4-2, 2-0 Southeast League) won their fourth straight game.

Foothill quarterback Drew Doxtator converted a third-and-11 with a screen pass to Ian Ellis for 25 yards, and a key holding penalty against Basic on third-and-9 from the Wolves’ 42-yard line kept the drive alive. Doxtator then connected with David Persi for 24 yards on the next play following the penalty to help set up Fisher's kick.

Doxtator finished 26-for-36 for 329 yards and three touchdowns. His 5-yard TD pass to Ellis, which came two plays after Basic was stopped at its own 20-yard line following a high snap to punter Pale Laulu, gave the Falcons a 27-18 lead 27 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Ellis had 10 receptions for 193 yards and two scores.

The Wolves (2-4, 1-1) rallied as quarterback Antraye Johnson found running back Jon Scoffield wide open over the middle for a 60-yard touchdown that made it 27-24 with 10:16 remaining in the fourth. Basic failed on the 2-point conversion — the Wolves were 0-for-4 on 2-point tries — but Johnson’s 33-yard punt return set up his game-tying 27-yard field goal with 4:19 to play.

On the final drive of the game, Johnson’s 20-yard scramble put Basic at the Falcons’ 33-yard line, but he threw three straight incompletions before Scoffield caught a dump-off pass on the final play and was stopped at the 10 as time expired.

Johnson had a huge night with 258 yards passing to go along with 154 yards on the ground, including a spectacular 67-yard touchdown run on the opening play of the third quarter that gave Basic an 18-14 lead. Johnson rolled to his right, scrambled back to his left while avoiding several defenders and then weaved his way across the field.

Johnson also had a 54-yard punt return for a score that gave Basic a 6-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Falcons answered Johnson's punt return as Fisher brought back the ensuing kickoff 52 yards, and four plays later Doxtator fired a 20-yard laser to Ellis to make it 7-6 with 3:22 left in the first quarter.

Scoffield put the Wolves back on top 12-7 early in the second with a 1-yard run, which was set up by Johnson's 32-yard strike to David Garza. But the Falcons regained the lead 1:14 before halftime as Doxtator hit Ellis on a slant for 33 yards, and Bobby Merritt capped the six-play drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to make it 14-12.

Scoffield finished with 48 yards rushing in addition to four receptions for 89 yards and two total TDs. Garza had four catches for 87 yards, all in the first half, for Basic.
