FOOTBALL: Patriots overcome miscues to defeat Cougars

Liberty football coach Rich Muraco was the first to concede his team didn't play its greatest game Friday night.

Even so, he was encouraged by the fact that the Patriots managed to overcome 19 penalties and two turnovers to get a 42-24 road victory over Coronado.

Quarterback Kenyon Oblad completed 15 of 27 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns to lead second-ranked Liberty, which took over by scoring three touchdowns in just more than two minutes late in the first half.

"Any time we play Coronado, it's going to be an emotional game," Muraco said. "At times we looked great tonight, but at other times we made too many mistakes."

His defense made a few miscues late in the first quarter, allowing the Cougars (2-2) to cap a 14-play, 71-yard drive with a 15-yard Jordan Patterson touchdown run to go ahead 6-0.

Liberty (3-1) took a 7-6 lead on the first play of the second quarter when Chad Tebay scored on an 8-yard run up the middle. Tebay sustained an apparent broken bone in his lower-right leg on the play, however, costing the Patriots their top running back.

"That injury affected our game plan," Muraco said. "We're a little thin at running back, and Chad has been doing such a great job. That injury made us throw the ball more than we planned."

The Patriots responded convincingly, scoring on an 18-yard pass from Oblad to Ethan Dedeaux, a 71-yard Damahny Whittle punt return, and a 5-yard Alofania Tevaseu run in a span of 2 minutes, 3 seconds to take a 28-6 lead into halftime.

Coronado battled back, scoring on a TD pass from Landen Rowland to Justin Balaga in the third and a 2-yard run by Patterson early in the fourth to cut it to 28-18. The Cougars were driving in Liberty territory when Dedeaux turned momentum with a 78-yard interception return that put the score out of reach.

"That was a big momentum changer," Muraco said. "Ethan's just a great player, and he always seems to make big plays for us."

Both teams added late TDs, but the Patriots controlled the final nine minutes.

Darion Acohido caught five passes for 120 yards and a TD to help Liberty,

Rowland completed 22 of 41 passes for 319 yards and two TDs for Coronado. Travis Boman had nine receptions for 120 yards for the Cougars.

With the game all but sealed for Eldorado, backup quarterback Jaime Rangle found Barnes for an 84-yard touchdown to put Eldorado ahead 28-6 with 1:18 to play.
