Three coaches, ’44 Wildcats named to Coaches Hall of Fame

Three former coaches and one team are among the newest additions to the Clark County High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame.

Former coaches Mickey Curtright (Las Vegas High), David Varrato (Eldorado) and John Wise (Basic) will be honored at a reception Dec. 4 at Badlands Golf Club.

The trio also will be introduced at the coin toss for the Class 4A state championship game Dec. 5 at Sam Boyd Stadium.

Curtright served as head coach at Las Vegas from 1979 to 1982. The former Missouri player also was an assistant at Bishop Gorman and Rancho.

Varrato was the first head coach at Eldorado in 1973, and was an assistant at Bonanza from 1976 to 1997.

Wise served on Basic’s staff for 27 years.

The team induction went to 1944 state champion Las Vegas (8-0), which is the only team in state history to not allow a point all season, according to the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association record book. The Wildcats never allowed consecutive first downs that season, either.

The inductees also will be honored at halftime of MAACO Bowl Las Vegas on Dec. 22 at Sam Boyd Stadium.
