Villaros, Wolves upset Pioneers

Basic’s Josh Villaros caught five passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another score to lead the Wolves (5-5) upset host Canyon Springs (6-4) 28-17 bin a Sunrise Region quarterfinal on Friday.

Neither team was able to gain any momentum early in the game but Villaros changed that on one play, breaking tackles and outracing the defense on a 61-yard end around for a score on the Wolves’ first possession of the second quarter.

Mason Hiedeman recovered a fumble on the ensuing Pioneers drive, and one play later Villaros added a 40-yard touchdown reception on a halfback pass from D. J. Thomas.

Canyon Springs (6-4), the Northeast League’s No. 1 seed, got on the board with a 43-yard field goal by Elio Rodriguez as time expired in the first half.

Basic got the ball to start the second half and extended the lead with a nine play, 80-yard drive capped by an incredible Villaros catch for another 40-yard score, this time from quarterback Aeneas McAllister.

Villaros streaked down the right side of the field and was able to tip the pass to himself at the 5-yard line, breaking two tackles before scoring his thrid touchdown.

McAllister threw a 9-yard TD pass to Chris Flum early in the fourth quarter to give the Wolves a commanding 28-3 lead.

Tre’von Dean replaced injured quarterback Bradley Alexander II and sparked the Pioneers to two fourth-quarter touchdown drives.

Zaviontay Stevenson scored on a 13-yard run, and Dean found C.J. Jones Jr. on a 15-yard TD strike.
