ROUNDUP: Gutierrez helps Wildcats top Rams, earn top seed for playoffs
Jenice Gutierrez stroked a two-run single in the top of the second inning to give Las Vegas High’s softball team all the runs it needed Thursday, and the Wildcats downed host Rancho, 3-0 to secure a share of the Northeast League title.
The Wildcats and Rams both finished 12-2 in league play, and Las Vegas earned the league’s No. 1 seed for the Sunrise Region playoffs as a result of a tiebreaker.
The teams split their regular-season series, and their beaten opponents had the same number of total wins. The third tiebreaker favored the Wildcats, who won the second meeting between the teams.
Brooke Booth scattered eight hits and fanned four for the Wildcats.
Krizzel Galvez added two hits for Las Vegas, which took advantage of a leadoff walk, a passed ball and a throwing error to add an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning.
Amber Marlett and Brandy Marlett each had two hits for the Rams, which came up empty three times on bases-loaded opportunities.
Foothill 5, Silverado 0 — At Silverado, Alex Petrolia fired a no-hitter with one walk and eight strikeouts as the Falcons secured the Southeast League’s No. 2 seed for the Sunrise Region playoffs by blanking the Skyhawks.
Lauren Penksa homered, and Aricia Dami was 1-for-4 with two RBIs for Foothill.
Coronado 11, Del Sol 0 — At Coronado, Danielle Amato tossed a five-inning perfect game with three strikeouts to lead the Cougars past the Dragons.
Amato also went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Lee Harrison was 3-for-3 with two triples and three RBIs, and Morgan Yuhas went 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs for Coronado.
Basic 6, Tech 5 — At Basic, Marissa Ross went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs as the Wolves nipped the Roadrunners.
Adrian Brown was 3-for-4 with a double for Basic.
Jordyn Roark went 2-for-4 with a three-run triple for Tech.
Eldorado 10, Valley 5 — At Eldorado, Brook Ortiz tripled, doubled and had six RBIs to lead the Sundevils past the Vikings.
Erica Estrada added two hits for Eldorado.
Mickayla Romero was 2-for-2 with a double, a triple and two RBIs for Valley.
Chaparral 15, Canyon Springs 5 — At Canyon Springs, Kendy Reynoso was 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs, and the Cowboys used a nine-run sixth inning to pull away from the Pioneers.
Andrea Bouschet had two hits and two RBIs for Chaparral.
Braylin Nichols had two RBI singles for Canyon Springs, which got two hits apiece from Dari Carter and Ali Givens.
Sunrise Mountain 18, Desert Pines 4 — At Desert Pines, Imani Kroon went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and a home run as the Miners routed the Jaguars in five innings.
Durango 18, Sierra Vista 3 — At Sierra Vista, Samantha Juarez had a triple and a two-run homer, and Kendal Short added a double, a triple, two RBIs and three runs as the Trailblazers routed the Mountain Lions in five innings.
Katie Moore doubled twice for Durango, which got RBI doubles from Marley Sandoval and Cydney Christensen.
Mackenzie Reynolds had an RBI double for Sierra Vista.
Mountain View 11-13, The Meadows 1-3 — At The Meadows, Lexi Alley tossed a three-hitter in the opener and a four-hitter in the nightcap as the Saints swept a pair of five-inning games from the Mustangs.
Alley struck out 16 without a walk on the day. She also went 3-for-5 with two RBIs.
Tayler Nelson scored a combined five runs for Mountain View.
Tonopah 16-28, Sandy Valley 0-6 — At Sandy Valley, Deanna Van Poucke went a combined 7-for-8 with two triples and was the winning pitcher in the second game to lead the Muckers to a sweep of the Sidewinders.
Andrea Eiseman was 6-for-8 with three triples on the day for Tonopah.
Britney Klapper pitched a five-inning three-hitter with eight strikeouts for the Muckers in the first game.
