ROUNDUP: Spencer pitches Bonanza past Rancho in Spring Jamboree

Bonanza’s softball coaches are at a loss when it comes to describing their team’s offense.

In the span of six games just before spring break, the Bengals scored a total of 84 runs.

Since then, though, Bonanza has struggled at the plate. But fortunately for the Bengals, Courtney Spencer has been fantastic in the circle.

Spencer dealt another gem Friday, tossing a five-hitter to help the Bengals scratch out a 4-1 win over Rancho in the opening round of bracket play at the Spring Jamboree at Majestic Park.

In four games in the tournament, Bonanza has scored a total of 16 runs, and 11 of those came in a pool game against Canyon Springs.

“You’ve got me,” Bonanza coach Dusti Winward said when asked about her team’s lack of offense. “We just haven’t clicked the last few games.”

Rancho freshman pitcher Aly Lamboo retired the first 13 Bengals batters Friday before Cheyenne Wells singled through the left side with one out in the fifth to give Bonanza its first base runner.

A wild pitch allowed the Bengals to score one run, and a dropped fly ball plated another in the inning.

Wells’ two-out, two-run triple in the sixth gave Bonanza breathing room.

It was more than enough for Spencer, who allowed only one Rancho runner to safely reach third base.

“Our battery is keeping us together right now,” Winward said.

Spencer registered four strikeouts, and the Bengals played nearly flawless defense, committing only one harmless error in the second inning.

A senior, Spencer needed only 91 pitches to record the complete game. She has allowed only six runs in Bonanza’s four tourney games.

“She has just been very focused,” Winward said. “She’s been consistent for us.”

Wells finished 2-for-3 with the two RBIs.

Lamboo, who allowed four hits and struck out three, was 2-for-3 and drove in the Rams’ lone run in the sixth inning.
