SOFTBALL: Bilodeau’s hit lifts Gaels in tournament opener

Kasey Bilodeau’s two-out single to right-center field with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning Thursday plated Ashley Witucki with the winning run as Bishop Gorman’s softball team nipped visiting Woods Cross (Utah) 5-4 in the opening game of the Kick Off the Season tournament.

Sierra Dias was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and Bilodeau went 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Gaels.

Caitlin Barber was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs for Woods Cross.

Salpointe Catholic (Ariz.) 9, Bishop Gorman 0 — At Gorman, Diana Montano belted a grand slam as the Lancers downed the Gaels in five innings in the Kick Off the Season tournament.

Mikayla Santa Cruz tossed a three-hitter for Salpointe Catholic.

Witucki was 2-for-2 with a double for Gorman.

Coronado 11, Copper Hills (Utah) 5 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Dylan Underwood went 4-for-4 with two RBIs as the Cougars downed the Grizzlies in five innings in the Tournament of Champions.

Basia Query was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Ashley Ward went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Coronado.

Hamilton (Ariz.) 10, Coronado 0 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Karlee Arnold was 2-for-2 with a double and a home run to power the Huskies by the Cougars in four innings in the Tournament of Champions.

Ali Ashner had two hits for Hamilton.

Coronado 7, Cienega (Ariz.) 2 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Query was 3-for-4 with a grand slam as the Cougars topped the Bobcats in six innings in the Tournament of Champions.

Jaiden Johnson and Marissa Kopp each supplied two hits for Coronado.

Ward threw a seven-hitter and struck out nine.

Palo Verde 12, Farmington (N.M.) 0 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Haylee Lupinetti and Kendall Hopkins combined on a five-inning no-hitter as the Panthers beat the Scorpions in the Tournament of Champions.

Kali Tomlinson went 2-for-3 with a double and a homer, and Alysson Snelling was 2-for-4 with a double for Palo Verde. Grace Chavez added two hits for the Panthers, and teammate Jessica Nimmo had a home run.

Palo Verde 6, Taylorsville (Utah) 2 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Taylor Askland threw a one-hitter with three strikeouts to lead the Panthers to the six-inning win in the Tournament of Champions.

Chavez went 2-for-3, and Nimmo and Tomlinson each doubled for Palo Verde.

Palo Verde 5, Norco (Calif.) 4 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Tomlinson was 2-for-3 with a double, and the Panthers held on to top the Cougars in five innings in the Tournament of Champions.

Snelling, Cara Beatty, Ryan McKenzie and Lauren Barker each had two hits for Palo Verde, which led 5-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth.

Lehi (Utah) 9, Centennial 8 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Sydney White and Stefani Zimmerman both homered to help the Pioneers edge the Bulldogs in the Tournament of Champions.

Makenzie Ball was 4-for-4 with two RBIs, and Brianna Benoit went 2-for-4 with a home run and a double for Centennial. Lina Barrera was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs for the Bulldogs.

Centennial 6, Los Lunas (N.M.) 0 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Deanna Barrera tossed a three-hitter and struck out six to lead the Bulldogs by the Tigers in the Tournament of Champions.

Barrera homered, and Christina Cerrone, Skyler Ball and Angel Love each added two hits for Centennial.

Faith Lutheran 12, Palo Verde Valley (Calif.) 0 — At Needles, California, Grace Hornsby went 2-for-2 with three RBIs to lead the Crusaders by the Yellowjackets in a three-inning game in the Colorado River Invitational.

Mosie Foley homered and had two RBIs, Ellie Fried was 2-for-2 with two RBIs, and Erin Gilchrist was 2-for-2 for Faith Lutheran.

Faith Lutheran 4, Coachella Valley (Calif.) 3 — At Needles, California, Samantha Jack raced home with the winning run on an attempted double steal with one out in the top of the fifth as the Crusaders rallied past the Arabs in five innings in the Colorado River Invitational.

Faith Lutheran trailed 3-0 after four innings but got singles from Fried, Clara Heislen, Ryleigh Gilchrist and Jack to start the fifth. Jack was on third and came home when Claire Peck drew a walk and continued on to second base, drawing the defense’s attention.

Ryleigh Gilchrist was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Faith Lutheran.

Valley 7, Williams (Ariz.) 0 — At Needles, California, Kristina Manthei tossed a five-inning three-hitter as Valley downed Williams in the Colorado River Invitational.

Monique Beaudry went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run for Valley. Manthei also went 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI, and teammate Shannon Williams went 1-for-3 with a double.

Tech 12, Western 9 — At Tech, Lisette Sanchez was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Katy Orellana was 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs as the Roadrunners held off the Warriors.

Western’s Jenessa Dunton went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, including a three-run homer. Alexis Moeaki went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, and Makalita Moeaki went 2-for-4 with a double for the Warriors.
