SOFTBALL: Coronado tops nationally-ranked Pacifica

Sarah Pinkston tossed a five-hitter Thursday to help Coronado stun nationally-ranked Pacifica (Calif.), 1-0, in the Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, Ariz.

Pinkston struck out three and walked one and got some help from her defense when left fielder Brooke Younie threw out the potential tying run at the plate on a two-out single in the fifth inning.

Pinkston’s two-out double in the fourth led to the game’s only run. Erica Hardy ran for Pinkston and scored on Sophia McCann’s single.

The Mariners were ranked No. 14 in the country by USA Today.

Coronado 10, Herriman (Utah) 9 — At Bullhead City, Ariz., Basia Query’s RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the fifth plated Tatum Spangler with the winning run as the Cougars edged the Mustangs in six innings in the Tournament of Champions.

Coronado trailed 9-7 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth before getting five consecutive singles to take the lead. Spangler’s RBI hit made it 9-8, and Dylan Underwood and Query followed with run-scoring singles.

Spangler went 3-for-3 with a home run, four runs and three RBIs, and Query was 3-for-4 with three RBIs for the Cougars. Underwood went 3-for-4, and winning pitcher Jillian James had a home run and three RBIs.

Palo Verde 10, Farmington (N.M.) 0 — At Bullhead City, Ariz., Kelsea Sweeney and Haylee Lupinetti combined on a four-inning perfect game and struck out 10 of the 12 hitters as the Panthers blanked the Scorpions in the Tournament of Champions.

Sweeney struck out eight of the nine hitters she faced.

Emily Guthrie was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and Lauren Oxford went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs for Palo Verde. Kali Tomlinson, Mackenzie McBride and Dejanae Gage each added two hits for the Panthers.

Palo Verde 2, Mater Dei (Calif.) 0 — At Bullhead City, Ariz., Sweeney spun a six-inning two-hitter and struck out six as the Panthers topped the Monarchs in the Tournament of Champions.

Grace Chavez was 2-for-3 with a solo home run for Palo Verde.

Centennial 3, River Valley (Ariz.) 2 — At Bullhead City, Ariz., Sonja Lawrence’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Bulldogs by the Dust Devils in the Tournament of Champions.

Jaden Tate led off the seventh with a pinch-hit single and was sacrificed to second before Lawrence produced the winning hit. Lawrence was 2-for-4 with a double, and Stephanie Day was 2-for-3 with a double for Centennial.

Jennifer Cerrone tossed a two-hitter and struck out 10 for the Bulldogs.

El Modena (Calif.) 9, Centennial 1 — At Bullhead City, Ariz., the Vanguards used an eight-run third inning to top the Bulldogs in the Tournament of Champions.

Tate was 2-for-2 with two doubles for Centennial.

Millikan (Calif.) 7, Green Valley 2 — At Bullhead City, Ariz., Kylee Perryman hit two home runs to lead the Rams over the Gators in the Tournament of Champions.

Italia Reinoehl hit a two-run homer in the third inning for Green Valley.

Herriman (Utah) 10, Green Valley 4 — At Bullhead City, Ariz., Mikaela Thomson hit a home run, and the Mustangs scored six runs in the fourth en route to the win over the Gators in the Tournament of Champions.

Jinger Meuir was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for Green Valley.

Cheyenne 13, Tech 0 — At Cheyenne, Kaitlyn Dutton and Jonnette Paddy combined on a no-hitter to lead the Desert Shields by the Roadrunners in five innings.

Taylor Cole was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Sabrina Stafford went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs for Cheyenne. Destiny Gain was 2-for-2 with a triple for the Desert Shields.

Legacy 1, Valley 0 — At Needles, Calif., Kellie Nelson tossed a five-inning three-hitter and struck out seven as the Longhorns nipped the Vikings in the Colorado River Invitational.

Legacy didn’t have a hit, but took advantage of Valley errors to score in the fourth inning.

Kristina Manthei tossed her second straight no-hitter for Valley, striking out six in four innings.

Coachella Valley (Calif.) 1, Legacy 0 — At Needles, Calif., the Longhorns were no-hit for the second straight game and fell to the Arabs in the Colorado River Invitational.

Nelson allowed just one hit and struck out four for Legacy.

Spring Valley 7, Basic 2 — At Basic, Michaela Hood fired a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and a double to lead the Grizzlies by the Wolves.

Ellie Endsley was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs, and Mariah Ward and Vivian Quiroz-Montano each had an RBI double for Spring Valley.

Bishop Gorman 5, Woods Cross (Utah) 3 — At Gorman, Sierra Dias and Samantha Stanfill combined on a five-inning no-hitter as the Gaels nipped the Wildcats in the Kick Off the Season Tournament.

Dias allowed two runs in the first inning, and Stanfill allowed one in the final four innings.

Morgan Blanner’s RBI double in the fifth inning broke a 3-3 tie. Jasmine Gibson had a three-run homer for Gorman.

Clovis (Calif.) 4, Bishop Gorman 1 — At Gorman, Brielle Vidmar tossed a three-hitter and struck out seven as the Cougars downed the Gaels in the Kick Off the Season Tournament.

Gibson homered for Gorman, which got a four-hitter from Stanfill.

Bishop Gorman 10, Aztec (N.M.) 8 — At Gorman, Monique Passalacqua drove in three runs to lead the Gaels past the Tigers in the Kick Off the Season Tournament.

Megan Coyle went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Ashley Witucki had two doubles for Gorman.

Shadow Ridge 11, Cimarron-Memorial 1 — At Cimarron, Kate Dennis was 3-for-5 with three doubles as the Mustangs routed the Spartans.

Shelbi Denman tossed a four-hitter and struck out seven for Shadow Ridge. Marisa Miano and Mia Voges each added three hits for the Mustangs.

Chaparral 16, Clark 8 — At Chaparral, Tabitha Mabry scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning when she circled the bases on her own strikeout as the Cowboys topped the Chargers.

Mabry reached on a dropped third strike and never stopped when the throw to first sailed down the right field line. It started a nine-run inning for Chaparral.

Winning pitcher Losi Brown was 2-for-3 with a home run and a double, and Crystal Clark went 2-for-2 with four runs for the Cowboys.

Kyhara Evenson was 2-for-4 with a home run for Clark.
