SPRING JAMBOREE: Masterson’s two-hitter, three-run blast carry Boulder City

Boulder City posed for a team picture with everyone holding up her index finger after finishing the team’s last game in the Spring Jamboree softball tournament Saturday.

One of the Eagles’ coaches jokingly asked if the one represented the number of wins the team had in five games in the tournament.

Wins didn’t come easily for Boulder City, but the Eagles gained valuable experience against quality competition and finished their weekend with a 3-0 win over Cheyenne at Majestic Park.

“This is what we need to see,” Boulder City coach Angelica Moorhead said. “It opens our eyes up. We have to know that we can play against these teams. We don’t see these types of teams in our league. It shows us that we have to pick up our game.”

The Eagles, who entered the tournament having won 12 of their first 14 games this season, learned valuable lessons in four games against teams from California on Thursday and Friday and came out sharp against the Desert Shields on Saturday.

Charlene Masterson tossed a two-hitter and struck out 11. She walked two and pitched out of a fourth-inning jam when Cheyenne (11-8) had runners at second and third with one out.

“She was just hitting her spots,” Moorhead said of Masterson, who effectively used her curveball and riseball to keep Cheyenne’s hitters off balance. “She’s so confident.”

The Eagles (13-6) committed only one error, a two-out fielding miscue with the bases empty in the sixth, and Masterson got a popout to end the inning. Cheyenne hit only two balls out of the infield.

Masterson also did all of the damage at the plate, belting a three-run homer to left field in the third inning to cap a rally that started with a two-out walk to Kylee Hamel. Lauren Axelson’s single put runners at first and second.

Masterson, a junior, was 2-for-3 with the three RBIs in a potential Division I-A Southern Region playoff preview. The Eagles lead the Sunrise League and have won six straight league titles. Cheyenne is tied for second in the Sunset League.

“This is a good thing for us. It shows us that we still have got work to do,” Moorhead said. “Our kids have to be ready. You never know what’s going to happen, and we can’t put all of our eggs in one basket. We have to come out and work hard, and they just have to believe in themselves.”

Lehi (Utah) 12, Green Valley 10 — Winning pitcher Stefani Zimmerman homered and doubled, and the Pioneers rallied from an 8-6 fifth-inning deficit to top the Gators in the Bronze Bracket final.
