Gaels finish second in High Sierra volleyball tourney

Bishop Gorman's girls volleyball team went 5-1 on Saturday and finished second in the High Sierra Invitational in Reno.

The Gaels won five straight matches before dropping a 25-15, 25-14 decision to Bishop Manogue in the championship match.

Sydney Lobato had seven assists, and Vashti Cunningham had four kills for Gorman, which got 10 digs from Alysia Nielson.

The Gaels, who finished 8-1 in the tournament, outlasted Ponderosa (Calif.), 25-20, 21-25, 15-9 in the semifinals.

Lobato had 29 assists, five digs and three aces, and Cunningham supplied eight kills and five digs for Gorman. Abbey Archambault had seven kills, and Nielson added 13 digs for the Gaels.

Bishop Gorman 2, Fillmore (Calif.) 0 —Sarah Lychock had nine digs, and Lobato dished out 18 assists in the Gaels' 25-18, 25-12 win over the Flashes.

Archambault had six kills, three aces and three digs, and Mya Ellis supplied five digs and two aces for Gorman.

Bishop Gorman 2, Elk Grove (Calif.) 1 — Lobato had 26 assists, three digs, two kills and two aces, and Kylie Gibson and Cunningham each had seven kills to lift the Gaels by the Thundering Herd, 25-12, 24-26, 15-9.

Archambault added six kills, three digs and three blocks, and Paige Poggione added four blocks and two kills for Gorman.

Bishop Gorman 2, Del Oro (Calif.) 0 — Archambault had five kills, five digs, three aces and two blocks to help the Gaels to a 25-14, 25-17 win over the Golden Eagles.

Lobato had 15 assists, two kills and two aces, and Cunningham and Gibson each had five kills for Gorman.

Bishop Gorman 2, Churchill County 0 — Ellis had nine digs and three aces, and Hailey Kraft added nine digs and two aces to help the Gaels start Saturday with a 25-11, 25-18 win over the Greenwave.

Cunningham had seven kills, and Lobato distributed 14 assists for Gorman.
