Legacy battles back to win Boulder City Invitational

Legacy's girls volleyball team nearly had to work overtime Saturday.

The Longhorns were down set point three times in the second set against Bonanza in the championship match of the Boulder City Invitational.

But Legacy battled back each time and finally claimed a 25-18, 29-27 win over the Bengals to claim the tournament title.

The Longhorns trailed 26-27 before rallying for three straight points behind two kills by Kiana Carter and one by Danielle Castillo to claim the victory.

"This is something we prepare for every day," said Legacy head coach Ray Lewis, whose team also trailed 5-0 in the opening set. "In practice, every single day, we do late game drills, where it's late in the game, we are down and we have to find a way to battle back. So for them, it's just like a normal day of practice. Nothing new, but they battle hard all the time, and that is what I like about this group of girls.

"In the huddle, I told them to be smart, play our game, don't make an error. We have to figure out a way to score, stay consistent on defense, play hard, and if we could do that, I knew we'd be all right."

Myah Maxwell led Legacy with 11 kills, two blocks and three digs. Castillo had three blocks and seven kills, and Saipeti Fuiava had eight kills and nine digs. Kamaile Mendonsa had 30 assists and five digs, and Mia Suzuki had 18 digs for the Longhorns.

Hayley Hunstman had three aces, six kills, two blocks and eight digs to lead the Bengals. Jaycie Johnson added four kills and five blocks for Bonanza.

While Maxwell, Castillo, Fuiava and Mendonsa ended up posting a lot of stats for the Longhorns, Legacy got contributions from just about everyone who stepped on the court Saturday afternoon.

Carter's kill ended the match, and Kassidy DeSchepper made a key dig to prolong a volley that the Longhorns ended up winning, which cut the Bengals' lead to 17-15 in the second set.

"They are really diverse," Lewis said. "We have different go-tos on different days. Any given day we can have a star player. And that is one of my favorite things about this team; no one has to be the star. Everyone does their part and contributes."

Lewis is hoping this tournament win will give his team the necessary confidence as the Longhorns begin play in the Southwest League when they travel to Shadow Ridge on Tuesday.

"This is huge for us," Lewis said. "For us, it was about coming in here and figuring ourselves out, getting to the point where we can battle hard and staying consistent. We have a lot of young players on this team, but they are working really well together right now.

"We are a strong team when we get going, but we have to keep it consistent. When we are consistent, we are team to reckon with."
