Sandoval appoints Las Vegas businesswoman to State Board of Education

CARSON CITY — Gov. Brian Sandoval on Monday announced the immediate appointment of Felicia Ortiz to the Nevada State Board of Education in District 3.

Ortiz will replace Allison Serafin on the board for the term ending Jan. 1, 2017. The appointment will be filled for a four-year term in the November general election.

“Felicia will be a strong advocate for the residents of Southern Nevada’s District Three on the Nevada State Board of Education,” Sandoval said. “The Board has been given new and expanded authority in implementing many of the accountability measures and allocating the unprecedented funding increase in public education as approved during the last legislative session. I am pleased Felicia has accepted this important position during this critical time.”

Serafin resigned at the end of 2015 to avoid any conflict of interest over her job with Opportunity 180, which is applying to contract with the state as part of a “charter harbormaster” program authorized by the Legislature last year.

Ortiz was born and raised in Las Vegas, New Mexico. She attended New Mexico Highlands University where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s in business administration from Keller Graduate School.

She moved to Nevada to pursue a career and worked in the private sector for several years before opening a small business.

Ortiz is a past president of the Las Vegas Chapter of the Association of Latino Professionals for America, is a member of the Latino Network of Southern Nevada, the Latin Chamber of Commerce, and is active in organizations and volunteer efforts in Southern Nevada.
