6-year-old girl drowns at Fourth of July party in northwest Las Vegas

A 6-year-old drowned and died Monday night during a Fourth of July party in the northwest valley.

The girl was found unresponsive in a pool about 7:10 p.m. at the 2500 block of Monte Carlo Drive home where the party was being hosted, near Torrey Pines Drive and Smoke Ranch Road, Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Jeff Goodwin said.

She was taken to MountainView Hospital, where she died, Goodwin said.

As of 11 p.m., it was unclear how the girl ended up in the pool or how long she was submerged.

It was also unclear whether anyone at the party will face charges.

A neighbor a few houses south of the Monte Carlo home said his family was also hosting a Fourth of July party Monday night when they heard knocks on their front door about 7 p.m.

When he answered, it was a few relatives of the child who drowned.

“They were looking for the girl,” the 62-year-old neighbor, who did not want to be named, said.

The neighbor said a group of men at his party then came outside and started searching with the relatives, adding that the girl’s family thought she had run off or gotten lost.

As the group of men helped look, the girl’s other relatives frantically knocked on other neighbors’ doors, pleading for help.

“Say 10 minutes later, the fire department showed up,” after a relative found the girl at the bottom of the pool, the neighbor said.

As the neighbor talked, fireworks popped up in the sky behind him. On the ground behind him, a little girl on a blanket in his family’s front yard watched.

“Wow,” she said in awe.

The neighbor listened to her, pausing.

“It’s a loss,” the neighbor said of the death. “It’s just too bad.”
