1 killed, 4 hurt in shooting at Florida ‘Zombicon’ — VIDEO

Fort Myers, Florida — Police are searching for the suspect in the downtown Fort Myers shooting that left one person dead and four others injured.

The shooting happened in the 2200 block of First Street around 11:45 p.m. -- while the annual Zombicon event was going on in downtown Fort Myers.

Thousands were filling the streets for the city's annual Zombicon Fest when witnesses say they heard eight to ten pops. Many immediately recognized it as gunfire and went running in every direction. Crowds of people were running in fear, not knowing what happened.

"We didn't know if it was real of fake. We ran, then we were like wait...was that real?" said Haley Delmonte of Naples.

"I just really didn't believe it because I thought it was part of what happened tonight," said Bronson Robinson of Cape Coral.

Authorities quickly evacuated people from buildings near the scene and block off the street.

Fort Myers Police say they found a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound was found in front of 2224 First St. The victim later died at the scene.

Four other victims suffering from gunshot wounds were taken to Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment. Their injuries were described as non-life threatening.

The suspect is still at large.

The organizers of Zombicon, Pushing DaiZies, Inc. released a statement early Sunday, saying they are deeply saddened by the news. "We take the safety of our patrons very seriously and take precautions in hiring security and police officers for our annual event," said Rachel Telfor, security coordinator.

"Our prayers go out to the family members and individuals involved in the incident" said Janet DeMarco, founder. "We are extremely confident in the Fort Myers Police Department and the actions they are taking to apprehend the assailant. Their response was quick and efficient to the incident."

Detectives along with Crime Scene Technicians are actively working the incident to include canvassing the area for witnesses.
