Mets announce 2 September call ups from Las Vegas 51s

The New York Mets have called up relievers Jamie Callahan and Jacob Rhame from the 51s and both will be active on Saturday as the Mets play a doubleheader in Houston.

Callahan, 23, joined the 51s last month after being acquired on July 31 as part of the Addison Reed trade with Boston. He is 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA over nine appearances with Las Vegas this season. This year, between Double-A Portland (Red S0x), Triple-A Pawtucket (Red Sox) and Las Vegas, he is 6-3 with a 2.94 ERA in 52 innings pitched.

Callahan, the Mets’ No. 30 prospect per MLB.com, was drafted in the second round of the 2012 draft and has no prior major league experience.

Rhame, the team’s No. 23 prospect, also was called up for the first time. The 24-year-old was acquired in August as the Mets dealt Curtis Granderson to the Dodgers. In four games with Las Vegas, he was 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA. Between Triple-A Oklahoma City and Las Vegas, he is 0-3 with a 4.00 ERA in 54 innings pitched this season.

Pitchers Robert Gsellman and Kevin McGowan also should likely join the Mets after the 51s’ season ends on Monday.
