51s drop 1-0 decision at Memphis for 10th straight loss

John Gast pitched seven shutout innings to outduel Steven Matz as the Memphis Redbirds edged the 51s 1-0 in a Pacific Coast League game halted one out into the bottom of the seventh because of rain Friday in Memphis, Tenn.

The victory was the seventh straight for the Redbirds (30-26), who handed Las Vegas (29-27) its 10th straight loss.

Gast (2-3) gave up four singles and one walk and struck out five, needing just 73 pitches (52 strikes). The left-hander benefited from four double plays.

Dean Anna supplied the only run with a home run, his first of the season, with two outs in the fifth inning.

Matz (6-4) gave up one run on seven hits and four walks and struck out five in six innings, throwing 97 pitches (63 strikes).

Dan Johnson, Stephen Piscotty and Ty Kelly each went 2-for-3 for Memphis, which left 10 runners on base.

Travis Taijeron went 2-for-2 for the 51s, who were outhit 8-4.

UNLV product Xavier Scruggs doubled leading off the sixth for the Redbirds. They proceeded to load the bases with one out before Matz notched a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning.

Cody Satterwhite relieved Matz to open the seventh and allowed a walk and a hit with one out. Rain prompted a 56-minute delay before the game was ruled complete.
