51s sweep Isotopes, push win streak to 12
After the offense helped the Las Vegas 51s extend their winning streak in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday, a great pitching performance in the nightcap pushed the run to 12 straight victories.
The 51s swept a doubleheader at Albuquerque, beating the Isotopes 11-2 in the first game and 3-1 in the second.
Wilfredo Tovar hit a pair of home runs in the opener. He hit a three-run shot with two outs in the second inning to open the scoring, then capped it with a solo shot in the top of the seventh.
Brooks Conrad had three hits and drove in three runs for Las Vegas and Darrell Ceciliani had three hits and scored three times.
Steven Matz improved to 4-1 on the season, allowing two runs on nine hits and striking out seven over six innings.
The strong individual performance on the mound was followed by more of a group effort in the nightcap.
Logan Verrett, who spent last year with the 51s only to be selected by Baltimore in December’s Rule 5 Draft, made his return to the Mets organization today and got the start.
Ordinarily a reliever, he went just one inning and allowed a run.
The bullpen took over from there. Four relievers combined to surrender just one hit and two walks over six scoreless innings, with Chase Bradford going 1 2/3 perfect innings to record the save.
Duane Below got the win.
Danny Muno had two doubles and scored a run for Las Vegas (18-8). Albuquerque fell to 11-15.
The teams continue the series with a 5:35 p.m. game today.
