Fan hit by foul ball during Cubs-Pirates game leaves hospital

A fan who was hit in the head by a foul ball during Monday night’s Cubs-Pirates game has been released from the hospital, according to a statement by the Pirates.

“The female fan who was struck by a foul ball during (Monday’s) game was sent via ambulance to the hospital for the appropriate examinations,” the team statement read. “Thankfully, the fan was released from the hospital following those examinations.”

The scary moment took place during the second inning when Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro fouled on a pitch from Pirates pitcher A.J. Burnett, sending the ball through the netting behind home plate. The ball went right at the woman, who was standing with her back to the game, knocking her to the ground after striking her head.

Fans sitting around the woman jumped into action before medical personel were able to get to her.

“We wish to thank the PNC Park personnel and fellow fans who were on the scene at the time, as well as the Pittsburgh EMS for their quick response,” the Pirates said Tuesday.

The Pirates also said they were trying to reach out to the woman, who wasn’t identified due to privacy laws, to show their support.
