Georgia RB Gurley suspended indefinitely

Georgia tailback Todd Gurley was indefinitely suspended Thursday while an investigation continues into a possible violation of NCAA rules, the school announced.

No additional details were immediately available. Georgia plays Missouori in an SEC game on Saturday.

“I’m obviously very disappointed,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said in a statement. “The important thing for our team is to turn all our attention toward preparation for Missouri.”

Freshman Nick Chubb is likely to start in Gurley’s place.

Gurley, one of the leading contenders for this year’s Heisman Trophy, has rushed for 773 yards on 94 carries, an 8.2-yard average, and scored eight touchdowns this season. He also has eight receptions for 53 yards.

With a 154.6-yard average, Gurley ranks third nationally in rushing yards per game this season.

The junior is listed as the No. 1 running back prospect by NFLDraftScout.com for 2015.

Gurley rushed for 1,385 yards as a freshman and 989 yards last year as a sophomore despite missing time with injuries.
