Nevada fishing report, Feb. 14, 2018

LAKE MEAD — Fishing was good over the weekend, but with the arrival of winds and cooler air temperatures the action has slowed. As water temperatures continue to warm in the coming weeks, black bass and catfish should become increasingly active. Bass action already is picking up in the Overton Arm where anglers have found good fishing with watermelon colored worms and Rooster Tails. Striped bass have been most active in the evenings. They have been taking anchovies fished just off the bottom.

LAKE MOHAVE — Anglers are reeling stripers at both the north and south ends of the reservoir. Boat anglers have been most successful with anchovies fished off the bottom. Black bass are showing signs of life in the Cottonwood Cove area. Look for them and catfish in shoreline vegetation and along underwater shelves.

LAUGHLIN — Rainbow trout have been providing the best action on the river. Shoreline and boat anglers are both catching fish. The trout are biting on worms, PowerBait, and Mice Tails. The best fishing is being found from the dam downstream through Casino Row to just above the Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area. Largemouth bass have been active and are hitting on Rooster Tails. Striper bites are hit and miss, but anglers are catching small fish using frozen anchovy pieces.

LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS — This week, the Nevada Department of Wildlife is scheduled to stock rainbow trout in the ponds at Hafen Park in Mesquite, Floyd Lamb, Sunset and Veterans Memorial Park, as well as the community of Beatty. Mealworms often work well this time of year for most fish species in the ponds.

KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA — Despite recent snow flurries, all area reservoirs are ice free. Rainbow trout should be well fattened up from feeding below what ice there has been the past couple of months. Action should pick up as water temperatures grow warmer.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR — Ice is completely off the reservoir. Several anglers found good fishing over the weekend with lures and commercial trout baits. Rainbow and orange colored PowerBait proved to be quite effective for one group of fishermen. The campground and all facilities are open.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR — The water is free of ice and starting to rise. Only a few anglers have been seen in recent days, but they are finding good fishing for rainbow trout with PowerBait in orange or green colorations. Spinners and spoons are good options for hardware anglers. The campgrounds and all facilities are open.

UPCOMING FISHING EVENTS — The Southern Nevada Family Fishing Club will meet Sunday, Feb. 25 from 2–4 p.m. at the NDOW Las Vegas office, 4747 Vegas Drive. The program this month is fly tying for all ages. NDOW will provide all equipment and materials free of charge.
