Candlelighters race day is today at Mountain’s Edge

Early risers can participate in the 5K race and walk and one-mile stroll, enjoy fun activities and support kids with cancer at today’s Candlelighters Shine for a Superhero 5K and 1 Mile Race with Chet Buchanan at Exploration Park in the Mountain’s Edge master planned community.

The park is at 9700 S. Buffalo Drive, just south of Blue Diamond Road.

Event day registration begins at 6:30 a.m., followed by the 5K run at 8 a.m. and the 5K walk and mile stroll at 8:15 a.m. Beginning in the morning, food and refreshments and a host of family friendly activities will continue through 11 a.m. Activities will include raffle prizes, superhero bounce houses, children’s play area, awards ceremony, bone marrow drive, and booths and exhibitors. Raffle prizes include an iPod Touch 64G, a 55-inch Vizio TV, and a MacBook Air. Some popular superheroes also will be in attendance.

Today’s festivities are free to attend, but event day race registration is $40. Well-behaved, leashed pets are welcome.

Attendees are encouraged to dress as their favorite superhero and join the many costumed teams, racers and walkers, given the event’s theme which exemplifies the strength and spirit of children with cancer and related issues.

The Shine for a Superhero 5K and 1 Mile Race with Chet Buchanan, formerly called the “Race for our Kids,” benefits the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of Nevada. The event helps the nonprofit organization raise money to support those affected by childhood cancer and teach the public about cancer’s effect on many Southern Nevada children and families.

Along with therapeutic, educational and social programs, Candlelighters provided more than $155,000 in financial support last year, including assistance for medical and prescription co-pays, mortgage and rent, utilities, local transportation, travel for treatment, scholarships and funerals, to more than 225 families facing childhood cancer. For information, visit www.candlelightersnv.org or call 702-737-1919.

The event is sponsored by Centennial Toyota, Mountain’s Edge and 8 News Now.
