NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR SENIOR CITIZEN OF THE YEAR

Nominations are being sought for Nevada’s Senior Citizen of the Year. Anyone 60 or older who has lived in Nevada for at least five years is eligible to be nominated.

The National Silver Haired Congress Nevada Delegation, in partnership with the Aging Services Directors Organization, established the award in 2013. Las Vegas resident Raymonde Fiol, 77, was the 2014 recipient.

The deadline for nominations is March 31. Guidelines and nomination forms are available at nevshc.org or by calling 702-860-6349. The award is to be presented in May.

LAKE MEAD SEEKS VOLUNTEERS FOR GREAT AMERICAN CLEANUP EVENT

CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT AWARDED FOR FIRST PHASE OF BOULDER CITY BYPASS

The Nevada Department of Transportation awarded an $83 million construction contract Feb. 9 to Fisher Sand & Gravel for the first phase of the Interstate-11 Boulder City Bypass.

The 2.5-mile-long project is set to construct a four-lane concrete interstate freeway between Silverline Road and Foothill Drive and a full diamond interchange at Railroad Pass with a loop ramp. Other project components include creating a 1.5-mile-long asphalt frontage road linking Henderson with the Railroad Pass interchange, plus replanting 20,000 cactuses, placing decorative rock and installing 5 miles of tortoise fencing. A pedestrian bridge is also planned to connect Henderson’s trail system with the River Mountains Loop Trail.

The first phase of the bypass is being funded by Federal Highway Administration monies. Groundbreaking is scheduled to begin in early April with anticipated completion in early 2018.
