Showers end in Las Vegas Valley; mountains have snowy holiday weekend

The Las Vegas Valley might not have a white Christmas, but residents can see one from afar with leftover snow sticking around in the Spring Mountains, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain in the valley is expected to end by early Sunday with a high of 48 degrees. Temperature highs will gradually rise into the next week reaching up to 60 degrees on Thursday, said meteorologist Andy Gorelow.

The Nevada Highway Patrol advises those planning to visit Mount Charleston to arrive early and be prepared for weather conditions. “Take it slow and get there early to avoid the rush,” NHP spokesman Jason Buratczuk said.

Lee and Kyle Canyons are also popular during the holiday weekend and can bring upward of 25,000 cars to the area. The Metropolitan Police Department and NHP will monitor traffic congestion and road conditions in both canyons. Road closures Christmas Day may block access to ski and snow areas in the canyons.

The Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway facilities will be closed Christmas Day, but the public can still use the restroom facilities at the Cliff Rose Trailhead across from the visitor gateway.

The Mount Charleston Winter Alliance suggests visitors closely monitor driving conditions. Chains may be required or four-wheel drive may be needed. Visitors can plan ahead by visiting www.GoMtCharleston.com.
