Smoke from SoCal fires brings air advisory for Las Vegas Valley

Monday begins a week of hot temperatures with an air advisory issued for wildfire smoke in the Las Vegas Valley.

The Clark County Department of Air Quality has issued an advisory for Monday and Tuesday for elevated levels of smoke and ozone from California wildfires, the department said Monday in a statement.

“Air quality officials say smoke is made of small dust particles and other pollutants that can aggravate respiratory diseases and contribute to ground-level ozone formation,” the release said.

The department advised that those sensitive to smoke and ozone are those with respiratory problems, cardiac problems, children and senior citizens, and that levels of fine particles may be present.

Tuesday forecast high is 110 degrees. Wednesday and Thursday should see highs of 112 degrees, before temperatures start cooling toward the end of the week, with a high of 110 degrees expected Friday, 107 degrees on Saturday and 105 degrees on Sunday, the weather service said.

The decreasing temperatures are causing a slight increase in moisture, Gorelow said. As the monsoon season resumes in the valley, a slight chance of showers are expected later in the week, he said.
