Charter school will expand to Las Vegas with new campus

The Coral Academy of Science will expand to Las Vegas with a new campus planned to open for the 2016-17 school year in the Centennial Hills area.

Coral Academy, a charter school with three existing campuses, announced its plans Wednesday for the new school in a former University of Phoenix building at 7951 Deer Springs Way, near the 215 Beltway and U.S. Highway 95.

The Centennial Hills campus will serve about 600 elementary students, according to a news release.

A spokeswoman didn't immediately reply to a request for a cost estimate of the expansion.

Coral Academy focuses on STEM, or science, technology, engineering and math. Using rankings based on the new of college-level tests given to students, a Washington Post report last year named the charter's high school the second most "challenging" in Nevada.
