Courthouse memorial set for Clark County District Judge Susan Scann

Along with funeral services, a memorial at the Regional Justice Center is scheduled for Clark County District Judge Susan Scann, who died at age 70 on Saturday after a long bout with pancreatic cancer.

On a wall outside her chambers, fellow judges and court staff posted notes and pictures as she battled the disease for more than a year. This week, the messages served as a makeshift memorial.

“We miss your smiling face,” read one note. “You will be greatly missed,” read another.

On Tuesday, Scann’s judicial portrait, draped in a black ribbon, was placed at the entrance of the courthouse. Next to it, a photo of her empty bench, a black robe laid across the chair.

Fellow District Judge Gloria Sturman recalled how she would sometimes drive Scann, a friend for 33 years, to the Regional Justice Center.

“Every time, she would talk about how much she loved her job,” Sturman said.

She and others in the legal community are expected to gather at 3:30 p.m. July 28 for a memorial inside the Jury Services room at the courthouse.

A rosary prayer service is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at Palm Mortuary on 7600 S. Eastern. The funeral service will be held at 1:15 p.m. Saturday at St. Francis de Sales Church, 1111 Michael Way.

Scann, who earned a law degree in 1976 from California Western School of Law, was among the first 100 women admitted to practice law in Nevada.

She was elected to the district court bench in 2010. She also served as an alternate municipal court judge for the city of Las Vegas from 1980 through 2010.

“She understood that the decisions she made really impacted people’s lives, their businesses, their families,” Sturman said. “She took so to heart the need to get it right.”
