Von Tobel Middle School gas leak was really malfunctioning heating unit

What was initially reported as a gas leak Friday morning at Ed Von Tobel Middle School was really a malfunctioning heating unit, school officials said.

Students were evacuated about 11 a.m. because of an odd smell permeating the school's gym, according to Clark County Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Buchanan. Students and staff waited for about 45 minutes while fire crews and Southwest Gas investigated the school at the corner of Pecos Road and Carey Avenue in the east valley.

At 11:43 a.m., they were cleared to re-enter after crews discovered the smell was coming from a heating unit that wasn't burning properly, school district spokeswoman Allison Cordova said.

No injuries were reported.
