Water line mishap damages equipment at new McCarran tower

Water damaged some internal computer equipment, office furniture and floors inside the new air traffic control tower set to open later this month at McCarran International Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday.

A contractor who was working on a third-floor ceiling inadvertently cut into a fire suppression-system line in the $99 million facility on Wednesday afternoon, FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said.

The value of the damage was not immediately cited, but Gregor said that none of the air traffic control equipment or operational areas were affected, and the mishap will not affect the tower’s scheduled opening date on Aug. 28.

The new 352-foot-tall tower is already opening eight months behind schedule, delayed by a pair of government shutdowns, followed by the discovery of a massive construction error.
