Congressional candidate Fiore hypes her 2nd Amendment calendar

Every politician wants to be viewed as a straight shooter.

That's especially important for Assemblywoman Michele Fiore, R-Las Vegas, a candidate for the 3rd Congressional District. She's selling a 2016 "Walk The Talk 2nd Amendment" calendar on her website.

Fiore, a staunch supporter of gun rights, models in the calendar with firearms. She has two holstered pistols in the promo for the calendar and the January image shows her holding a firearm.

"January Is National Self-Defense Awareness Month," the lettering on the January photo says. "But Sometimes, Awareness Is Not Enough."

The calendar offers more than eye-catching images of the gun-toting state legislator. Entries throughout the calendar mark the anniversaries of when gun owners protected themselves against intruders.

The calendar also includes tips for staying safe, such as how to safely approach your vehicle and be aware of your surroundings.

"While this calendar may create controversy with the anti-gun crowd, my hope is that this calendar will bring attention to the safe and positive role firearms play in our lives," Fiore's website, www.votefiore.com, says in introducing the product.

They come if you pay a donation of $25 or more.

Fiore is running for Rep. Joe Heck's 3rd Congressional District seat.

The race is wide open because Heck, a Republican, is running for the seat of retiring U.S. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat. Fiore was elected in 2012 and again in 2014 to the Assembly's District 4 seat. In the 2010 primary, she unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination to run in the general election for the 1st Congressional District seat.

Oscarson to seek third term

State Assemblyman James Oscarson says he'll run for a third term in the 2016 election.

Oscarson, R-Pahrump, was first elected in 2012 to District 36 that includes portions of Clark, Nye and Lincoln counties.

During the 2015 session he was chairman of the Assembly Health and Human Services Committee. He also served on the Natural Resources, Agriculture and Mining Committee, as well as the Ways and Means Committee.

He supported moderate Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval's tax package and education reforms.

"I am extremely proud of the historic reforms we were able to pass in the last legislative session," Oscarson said in a release announcing his re-election bid. "We accomplished more than I ever thought possible, but there is still much to do."

Oscarson said seniors and veterans need more help and rural Nevada needs more attention. He added he also would work to strengthen Second Amendment rights.

The official candidate filing period opens March 7 and runs through March 18.

Scott to try again for Assembly

Transgender entrepreneur and civil rights activist Lauren Scott announced last week she intends to again seek election as a Republican candidate for Nevada's Assembly District 30 in the 2016 election.

The Northern Nevada district is currently represented by Michael Sprinkle, a Democrat from Sparks.

"The positive changes that were made in the 2015 legislative session must continue," Scott said. "We cannot allow the state to return to the days of poor fiscal policies, chronic debt spending and corruption by special interest groups. A balanced approach to governing must be maintained in the state Legislature."

Scott won the 2014 District 30 Republican primary with 58 percent of the vote but lost to Sprinkle in the general election with 46 percent of the vote. If elected, she could become the country's first openly transgender person to serve as a state legislator.

"As a lobbyist, I have worked closely with Nevada lawmakers during the past four legislative sessions to pass groundbreaking legislation," Scott said. "There is still much work to be done to get the state back on track.

"Many Nevadans remain underemployed and struggle every day to make ends meet," she said. "We need to educate our workforce, attract a wide range of businesses to Nevada and provide existing small businesses the tools and the support they need to succeed.

"In short, we need to get Nevada working again."

Scott was an active-duty member of the Air Force. She served three years at the Tonopah Test Range in support of F-117A stealth fighter operations. She received two achievement medals and was awarded a commendation medal for her service during Operation Desert Storm. She received an honorable discharge in 1994. She holds a bachelor's degree in business administration.
