NHL postpones Maple Leafs-Senators game after Ottawa shootings

The NHL postponed the game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators after a series of shootings in downtown Ottawa on Wednesday.

According to reports Wednesday morning, a soldier was shot when a man opened fire at the National War Memorial on Parliament Hill and there were two additional shooting sites in Ottawa. The soldier shot has died, a government official said.

“The National Hockey League wishes to express its sympathy and prayers to all affected by the tragic events in Ottawa,” the league said in a statement.

The Leafs were scheduled to play the Senators on Wednesday night at Canadian Tire Centre in nearby Kanata. The date and time of the rescheduled game will be announced at a later date.

The Maple Leafs were on lockdown at the team’s hotel in downtown Ottawa, a team representative confirmed to ESPN.com.

Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul described the scene on Twitter:

“Surreal scene outside of our hotel right now. Lot of very brave police officers we should all be very proud of.”
