Manager fired after Marlins nearly no-hit

The Miami Marlins fired manager Mike Redmond on Sunday after being swept by the Atlanta Braves and nearly the victims of a no-hitter.

The team made the announcement that it had fired Redmond and bench coach Rob Leary shortly after Sunday’s 6-0 loss to the Braves in Miami. The Marlins did not get a hit off Braves right-hander Shelby Miller until there were two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Redmond’s replacement will be named Monday, the Marlins said.

Redmond was in his third season as the Marlins manager, and he was given an extension after the 2014 season that runs until 2017.

In his three seasons with the Marlins, Redmond compiled a 155-207 record.

Expectations were high this season after the Nationals went 77-85 in 2014 and showed promise.

But the team has now lost three straight games and six of its last seven to stand at 16-22, six games out first place in the National League East.
