Chow Mein House brings authentic Chinese dishes to Summerlin

Chow Mein House owner Alan Zhengalan’s background may be chemical engineering, but his after-work passion is cooking for friends and family. In fall 2015, he brought that passion to the public, opening his restaurant at 10300 W. Charleston Blvd., Suite 5.

Not too many Chinese restaurants have the updated style of Chow Mein House. Step inside, and you’re greeted by a polished interior of grays and blacks offset with marble, along with plenty of booth seating in an open-air concept.

In 1990, Zhengalan moved to Las Vegas and opened his first eatery. It was voted “Best of Las Vegas” in 2004. Family concerns saw him move back to China for six years before he returned to open Chow Mein House in Summerlin.

The menu includes appetizers such as pot stickers, shrimp tempura, barbecue sliced pork, lettuce wraps and Chinese chicken salad. There are seven soups including corn egg flower, hot and sour, wor wonton and seafood tofu. The house specials come with steamed rice (seafood combination in garlic sauce; lobster sauteed with house Xo sauce). Braised prawns in hot sauce, stir-fry scallops with asparagus, scallops sauteed in Xo sauce, egg foo yong varieties and crispy duck are also on the menu.

The menu is divided by meat. Poultry selections include mu shu chicken, General Tso’s chicken, orange chicken, sesame chicken, moo goo gai pan, Szechwan chicken in hot garlic sauce and lemon chicken. Seafood selections include prawns in eight variations such as stir-fried, sesame, Kung Pao and Szechwan, and a fish fillet in black bean sauce. The 10 beef dishes run the gamut from Mongolian to beef broccoli, Hunan and curry style. Pork selections include mu shu, pork eggplant in hot garlic sauce, sweet and sour, and barbecue pork with vegetables.

For those who like tofu and veggies, there is crispy fried tofu sauteed with snow peas, cabbage, zucchini, mushrooms, carrots, snow peas and broccoli in brown sauce (available with or without tofu), tofu with ginger and onion, tofu with eggplant in hot garlic sauce, braised string beans in black sauce, spinach sauteed in garlic, and seasonal asparagus served in a garlic sauce.

Lunch specials are offered from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Chow Mein House is open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
