1. Sweets, Treats & Spoilers: A Third Thursday event and car show are planned at Village Square, 9400 W. Sahara Ave., from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 20. Third Thursdays provide the community with fun activities while taking advantage of promotions at the shops and restaurants in the center. A Community Back to School Drive is planned during the August event. Needed items include pencils, pens, glue, scissors, paper, backpacks, crayons, colored pencils, tissue and rulers. 2. Ward 4 Back-to-School Fair & Movie:School supplies and backpacks are set to be distributed at a back-to-school event set for 6:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Durango Hills Community Center/YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive. Join Ward 4 Las Vegas City Councilman Stavros Anthony for this free event that is also set to feature a screening of the 2015 movie "Cinderella" with free popcorn and water. 3. Dash and Splash: The event set for Aug. 22 at the Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive, will feature a 1.5-mile run through Veterans Memorial Park, followed by a 300-meter swim in the pool. There is no age limit, but participants must be able to swim 100 meters. 4. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk: The American Cancer Society plans to host a kickoff breakfast for its annual Making Strides event at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 20 at Red Rock Resort, 11011 W. The 2014 Desert Companion "Focus on Nevada" Photo Showcase: The gallery is planned from 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays through Aug. 22 at the College of Southern Nevada Artspace Gallery, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave. Each year, Desert Companion magazine holds an annual "Focus on Nevada" photo contest and publishes noted entries in its June issue consisting of photography of Southern Nevada, including categories such as people, places, abstracts and altered images. Dino Summer: The visiting exhibit is planned at the Springs Preserve, 333 S. Valley View Blvd., through Sept. 20. It is set to feature an animatronic Tyrannosaurus rex and triceratops, interactive video games and a dino bone dig. The attraction is also scheduled to offer a 30-minute live animal show titled "Eat or Be Eaten: Predators and Prey" at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily through Aug. 23 and Aug. 29 and 30. The show is set to feature Springs Preserve zoologists and staff members with a rotating cast of animals, including bugs, lizards, snakes and small mammals. Audience members can participate in trivia games to win prizes. A behind-the-scenes tour, offering a chance to get up close with the animals, is planned from noon to 1 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
