Prompted by the idea of grass height, reader John Enfield provided the following gardening information:

“As a botanist and expert gardener myself, I can attest that most grass species, except for grasses that are short to start with like buffalo grass or bentgrass, are healthier in our dry, hot climate if you let them get to be 6 inches tall before you cut them down to 4 inches. Less stressful on the grass to do this since most grass species, except for better adapted ones like alkali sacaton and coastal bermudagrass, are under stress already without being cut too short.”
