86 mph winds rake Reno-Tahoe area
RENO — A Sierra storm packing winds gusting in excess of 85 mph toppled trees and downed power lines in the Reno-Tahoe area, leaving more than 1,000 homes without power for several hours.
The National Weather Service issued a lake wind advisory in effect until 5 p.m. Wednesday for Lake Tahoe, where small boats were prone to capsizing in waves up to 4-feet high.
Wind gusts reached 86 mph early Wednesday atop the Mount Rose Ski Resort, 77 mph near Virginia City and 61 mph at Reno-Tahoe International Airport.
A gust of 106 mph was reported farther south at the White Mountain summit northeast of Bishop, California.
NV Energy customers lost power for two to five hours in Glenbrook, Incline Village, Sparks and Stead. But by noon, the utility said only 36 homes had no power.
