Home prices hit post-bust lows in Las Vegas

WASHINGTON — Home prices in a majority of major U.S. cities tracked by a private trade group, including Las Vegas, have fallen to their lowest levels since the housing bubble burst, and analysts expect further declines this year.

Consumer confidence hits 3-year high

NEW YORK — Consumer confidence rose in February to its highest point in three years as Americans feel more optimistic about their income prospects and the direction the economy is headed, a private research group reported Tuesday. The Conference Board says its Consumer Confidence Index climbed to 70.4 this month, up from a revised 64.8 in January, hitting its highest level since February 2008.

Four American hostages killed by pirates

NAIROBI, Kenya — Four Americans taken hostage by Somali pirates off East Africa were shot and killed by their captors Monday, the U.S. military said, marking the first time U.S. citizens have been killed in a wave of pirate attacks plaguing the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean for years. U.S. naval forces quickly boarded the vessel after hearing the gunfire and tried to provide lifesaving care to the Americans, but they died of their wounds.

In a column and an online blog item, columnist John L. Smith, while writing about documents filed in a lawsuit against Las Vegas Sands Corp. by a former company executive, mistakenly stated that cash was couriered between the company’s Las Vegas and Macau operations. Court documents do not say cash was shipped, and the company says no cash was ever transferred.
