Two more take names off ballot

Two more people withdrew their candidacies for federal, state and local public offices Tuesday, bringing to 14 the number who backed out by the 5 p.m. deadline at the Clark County Election Department and the secretary of state’s office.

At 81, ex-Assemblyman seeks state Senate seat

He might be 81, but former Assemblyman Harry Mortenson says he’s the right age and has the right stuff to be elected state senator for District 11 in Clark County. Mortenson, a Democrat, was prevented by term limits in 2010 from seeking re-election to the Assembly. His opponent is Aaron Ford, who is 39. The winner will face Republican John Drake in November.

County, North Las Vegas closing in on channel deal

Clark County and North Las Vegas may be closing in on a deal that could settle several disputes, including the use of a storm channel by the city’s new sewage treatment plant. County Commissioner Larry Brown on Tuesday said a draft deal covers the city’s release of treated wastewater into the county-owned Sloan Channel as well as the development of a county park at Nellis Dunes and annexation of vacant land along Interstate 15.

Heller: Repeal oil breaks, cut gasoline tax

Criticized by Democrats who portray him as a friend of Big Oil, Sen. Dean Heller proposed Tuesday to repeal some of the industry’s tax breaks and use the savings to reduce gasoline costs for motorists. Heller, R-Nev., submitted a Senate amendment to reduce the 18.3 cent per gallon federal gas tax by a penny, and make reductions in diesel mixture and aviation fuels.

Rock ‘n’ Roll race unveils major course change as part of improvement plan

Competitor Group, the San Diego-based company that oversees all the Rock ‘n’ Roll events, unveiled a seven-point plan Tuesday to address issues with the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon and Half-Marathon. The plan includes a major change to the race courses, which will feature a mid-Strip finish by Caesars Palace.

Voters can update registration online

Clark County voters can now update their registration information online with a Nevada driver’s license or a Department of Motor Vehicle-issued ID. The county website includes an online voter registration tab that redirects visitors to the secretary of state’s website to update information.
